The Belgians claim they were frying potatoes as early as 1680 but bizarrely it is US President, Thomas Jefferson, who provides the earliest evidence that the chip was invented by a Frenchman. In one of the President’s manuscripts (circa 1801-1809) he mentions “Pommes de terre frites à cru, en petites tranches” (“Potatoes deep-fried while raw, in small cuttings”) which was certainly one of Honoré Julien’s dishes, his renowned French chef.

There is a theory that us Brits and servitude do not go hand in hand and indeed our ranking of 14th in the 2010 international customer service rankings from the Nation Brand Index supports this (the Canadians were top if you were wondering). It is possible that a class filled ‘Upstairs-Downstairs’ attitude to a career in service has held the country back from developing this vital ingredient in the consumer experience.

According to a poll undertaken by Sharwood’s, Chinese food now ranks above Indian and Italian as our favourite national cuisine. As Chinese New Year takes place tomorrow amidst dragons, lanterns and fireworks to celebrate 2011 and the year of the Rabbit (peaceful and prosperous apparently), what is it about the Oriental cuisine that has propelled it to the top of the list?
