The RHS Chelsea Flower Show began, in kind, in 1862 and has grown into a truly global event with exhibitors and guests drawn from all corners of the world. The presence of Prince Albert of Monaco gives an insight into the event’s pulling power whilst the volume of gardening fans who flock through the gates each year (157,000 in 2010) confirm it.

McDonald’s are to undertake a staggering US$1billion revamp of their restaurants in an attempt to attract customers from some of their more upmarket rivals. Their one time policy of encouraging customers in and out of their restaurants as quickly as possible has gone full circle. The senior management are looking to take a bite into café culture, by encouraging customers to spend more time in their restaurants, and are hoping that the new designs and features such as wooden flooring, quiet booths, muted colours and free Wi-Fi will help them to do so.

Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, Henley Regatta and Chelsea Flower Show are just a few of the summer’s major events that evoke quintessentially English images. Whether it is ladies in fascinators by Ascot’s famous winning post or men in linen jackets watching world class rowing at Henley, the guests are part of history and tradition. They are also highly likely to have a drink of some sort in their hand!

Flower cookery can be traced back to Roman times and has played an important role in the development of Middle-Eastern, Indian and Chinese cuisine. In the UK, they have dipped in and out of fashion since the rule of Queen Victoria and in 2011 we once again see them return to the mainstream as supermarket giants Waitrose and M&S add a range of edible flowers to their food selections.
